While Chad recently became an oil exporting state after first producing oil in 2003 and completing the creation of a $4bn pipeline linking its oilfields to terminals on the Atlantic coast, it is still classified as one of the world’s poorest countries, ranking 183 out of 187. Chad faces numerous challenges that have hindered its ability to make progress towards the Millennium Development Goals.
Rich in gold and uranium, post-independence conflicts have left the country with a poor infrastructure, widespread poverty and its own internally displaced population. The UNDP states that 61.9 per cent of the population lives on less than US $1.25 per day.
Furthermore, its geographic proximity to Sudan, a country that has witnessed significant conflict, has resulted in, Chad hosting one of the world’s largest refugee populations. UNHCR advises that Chad hosts an estimated 281,000 Sudanese and 54, 000 Central African Republican refugees.
Educate A Child (EAC) has partnered with UNHCR to bring quality primary education to refugee children in 12 priority countries.
As the global refugee protection agency, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) is responsible for ensuring that refugee children have access to quality education in their countries of asylum. There are over 2.7 million refugee children out of school in 12 targeted project countries.
The Revitalizing Basic Education in Chad project seeks to improve access to quality primary education in Chad. Over the course of a 4.5-year period, a total of 34,760 currently out of school children will be able to access quality primary education.
